FAQ · Edible Oil
Edible Oil Filling — Frequently Asked Questions
Selection, technical, installation, certification and commercial questions, answered with parameters for oil lines.
Respuesta corta: Edible oil is filled by weight, not level, because it is sold and declared by weight. Load cell valves weigh each bottle and close at target net weight, the correct choice because a percentage error is a large absolute quantity in a 5–15 L container. Oil is filled warm to lower viscosity; PET runs on a combiblock, jerry cans and drums on separate fillers. This page answers the questions buyers ask most, grouped by subject.
- Combiblock for PET; separate filler for jerry can and drum
- Load cell is the most accurate principle for weight-declared oil
- Scope-normalise quotations — temp control, CIP and load cell are common exclusions
- Haz tres preguntas por escrito.: sustained output on your container, exclusions, changeover time

1. Preguntas de selección
The questions buyers ask before a specification exists. The full selection logic is in the edible oil selection guide.
What output should I size an oil line for?
On the volume you can sell within roughly two years, not the market you hope to hold in ten. A regional PET bottler is usually served by 6,000–18,000 BPH. Idle capacity still carries installed power, footprint and a larger spare part inventory. Plan the building for a second line rather than over-sizing the first.
Can one machine run PET, jerry can and drum?
Not one machine. PET runs on a combiblock; jerry can and drum run on separate fillers, because they are not blown from preforms. A plant selling all three runs separate machines at very different speeds. State the full container range at quotation so the line is specified for it.
Do I need a combiblock for edible oil?
Only for PET. A blow-fill-cap block blows PET from a preform and only applies to PET, with load cell filling on the bottle. Jerry cans and drums are filled on separate machines. See la guía de selección for why the block applies to PET and not to bulk containers.
- Target output at a named container size and fill weight
- Every container and closure you intend to run, including later ones
- Oil grade and fill temperature
- Declaration: by weight or by volume, and the tolerance
- Site conditions: power, heating, water for CIP, building dimensions and door openings
- Scope items: temperature control, CIP, load cell and test weights, labeller, packer
2. Preguntas técnicas
Which filling principle is most accurate for oil?
Load cell weighing, because it measures net weight directly and compensates for empty-bottle weight variation and density shift with temperature. Volumetric is next, adequate where volume declaration is allowed and the oil is thin. Gravity level filling is rarely right for oil because it does not guarantee the declared weight.
Why does temperature control matter?
Because oil viscosity and density both move with temperature. Stable warm oil fills fast and clean; variable temperature lets the delivered weight drift even on a weight-dosed line, because the load cell weighs mass while the customer judges the product by volume. Hold the fill temperature and the line holds both speed and weight.
¿Cómo se limpia la línea?
Through a CIP circuit suited to greasy product: a hot caustic wash, rinse and sanitisation on the product path. Oil is harder on seals than water, so CIP and seal specification matter more than on a water line. Specify CIP with the line rather than adding it later.
What causes weight variation?
| Síntoma | Causa más común | Comprobar primero |
|---|---|---|
| Drift across a shift | Temperature or density shift | Fill temperature control |
| One valve different | Worn seat or blocked path | That valve's service history |
| Step after changeover | Format or zero setting | Changeover checklist and zero |
What does the building need?
- Level floor with load capacity and any foundation work done
- Power at correct voltage and frequency, stable to the machine
- Heating for the product and CIP, and water for CIP at required quality and flow
- Access route for machine sections, including door widths and lift capacity
¿Cuanto tiempo tarda la puesta en servicio?
In phases: mechanical installation, utility connection, water running, product running and speed ramp, then training. Oil commissions without the foaming behaviour of carbonated product or the temperature stability step of hot-fill, so it is relatively straightforward — delays are usually site readiness, not the machine.
What is checked at the factory acceptance test?
Mechanical operation, controls, safety interlocks, output at rated speed and fill weight on your own bottles and oil. Send real bottles and real oil in production quantity; testing on generic items then finding yours differ defeats the purpose. Agree the acceptance criteria in writing first.
4. Cuestiones de certificación y cumplimiento
¿Qué certificaciones posee Sunswell?
ISO 9001 and CE certification, with SGS audit. Equipment is built in a 20,000 m² facility and 444+ lines have been delivered to 71+ countries. These are company and equipment credentials; market-entry approval for your destination is a separate process with your importer.
Handled with your importer, because the scheme depends on the destination and on who is the responsible importer. Sunswell supplies the technical documentation, drawings and declarations. Start it early — certification runs in parallel with manufacturing.
Material specifications for product-contact parts, including stainless steel grades and elastomer types suitable for oil, supplied with the machine documentation. State the destination market at quotation if a specific food-contact standard applies, because it can change the gasket specification.
5. Preguntas comerciales
How much does an edible oil filling line cost?
Price scales with output, valve family, container family and automation, then with contact-part material and downstream scope. Figures without a defined scope mislead. Send the container range, grade and target output and request a written quotation against a stated scope. Tiers are compared in edible oil machine configurations compared.
¿Qué suele faltar en un presupuesto barato?
Temperature control, CIP for greasy product, load cell and test weights, format parts for other containers, installation, commissioning, training and a commissioning spare part set. Build one scope list, send it to every supplier and require line-by-line answers including exclusions.
¿Cuáles son los principales gastos de funcionamiento?
Electricity for heating and the line first, then water and caustic for CIP, labour, consumables such as caps and labels, and spare and wear parts. Giveaway — overfill to stay above the declared weight — is the largest hidden recurring cost and the main reason to specify load cell filling.
¿Qué soporte posventa está disponible?
Sunswell runs local service in 9+ countries and supports installations across 71+ export markets with remote diagnostics, spare parts and engineer visits. Agree response expectations and the spare part list in the contract rather than after the first breakdown.
Three questions that prevent most disputes. Pregunte a cada proveedor, por escrito: ¿cuál es la producción sostenida en my container; what is excluded from this quotation; and what is the changeover time between my two most common containers. Those three separate comparable quotations from ones that only look comparable.

Preguntas frecuentes
Is edible oil filled by volume or by weight?
By weight for weight-declared oil. A load cell valve weighs each bottle and closes at target net weight, which is the correct choice because a percentage error on oil is a large absolute quantity, especially in a 5–15 L container. Volume dosing is used only where the market allows a volume declaration.
¿Por qué el aceite se calienta?
Warm oil is less viscous and fills faster with less entrained air. The product is held or heated to a controlled temperature before the filler — not to a sterilising temperature, just warm enough to flow. The exact figure depends on the grade, so confirm it at quotation.
¿Puede un bloque combinado llenar aceite comestible?
Yes, for PET bottles. A blow-fill-cap block for edible oil uses load cell filling on PET from 1 to 5 L or more. Larger jerry cans and drums run on separate fillers because they are not blown from preforms, so the block does not apply to them.
It is the most accurate principle available, measuring net weight directly and compensating for empty-bottle weight variation and density shift with temperature. Accuracy matters more for oil than for water because oil is higher value per litre and sold by weight.
¿El aceite hace espuma durante el llenado?
Less than carbonated or hot-fill product, but aeration still matters for quality and headspace. Oil is filled bottom-up or through a diving fill tube to keep the stream below the surface, which limits entrained air. Foam at the neck signals too fast a fill or a wrong tube.
¿Qué tamaños de envases son habituales?
PET bottles 1–5 L for retail, jerry cans 5–20 L for foodservice and distribution, and drums for bulk. The filler is specified for the size range you will run; PET and jerry can are different machine families, so state both if you sell both.
What spare parts should be held for an oil line?
Seals and gaskets for the valves, a commissioning set of wear items, and for load cell lines a spare cell and test weights. Oil is greasy, so CIP parts and seal kits see more wear than on a water line. Identify long-lead items at handover.
