Ready-to-drink Tea — Line Configuration Options and Investment Levels
Tea lines configure around the preservation route — hot-fill is the mainstream — and within it, the levels run from a standalone hot-fill filler to an integrated line and a hot-fill combiblock. This page compares the options on output, footprint and flexibility.
Короткий ответ: Three levels cover RTD tea: a standalone hot-fill filler fed by batching and heat treatment (flexible, small-to-mid output), an integrated line linking batching–filler–cooling (mid output, tight control), and a hot-fill combiblock (volume PET, light bottle, smallest footprint). The preservation route is fixed first; the levels are an efficiency ladder, not a quality ladder.
🎯 Основные выводы
- Hot-fill is the mainstream preservation route; the package holds the heat.
- Standalone fillers suit flexibility; integrated lines suit mid-output control.
- Combiblocks bring volume, light bottles and footprint savings above roughly 8,000 BPH.
- Extraction and haze control are tea-specific — they sit in the front end, not the filler.
- Investment follows output and integration — size to year-one sales.

1. The three levels
RTD tea lines configure at three levels: standalone hot-fill filler, integrated line, and hot-fill combiblock. The preservation logic is the same in all three — fill hot into a heat-rated bottle, cap, and let the package hold the heat — and the levels differ in output, integration and footprint. The front end (extraction or base dosing, deaeration, heat treatment) is shared across them.
| Уровень | Конфигурация | Наиболее подходящий |
|---|---|---|
| Автономные | Hot-fill filler + batching/heat upstream | Flexible, small-mid output |
| Комплексный | Linked batching–filler–cooling | Mid output, tight control |
| Комбиблок | Hot-fill blow-fill-cap | Volume PET, light bottle |
Choose by output and format stability — not by which level sounds more advanced.
2. Standalone hot-fill filler
A standalone hot-fill filler takes prepared, heated tea from the batching and heat-treatment skid and fills heat-rated bottles. It handles PET and glass, changes formats with change parts, and suits small-to-mid output or a plant that runs several products. For a producer adding tea to an existing juice or water hall, it slots into the plant's front end.
The standalone route keeps flexibility — several flavours, seasonal products, bought-in bottles — at the cost of footprint and labour per bottle.
3. Integrated line
An integrated tea line links batching, deaeration, heat treatment, filler, cooling and packing under shared control, with the product path as one engineered system. It tightens footprint and labour, and the process control holds the tea's quality batch after batch — the right tier for a plant running one product family at mid output.
For a multi-flavour tea line, ask about the CIP path and changeover procedure at the integrated level — that is where multi-flavour plants live or die.
Integrated does not mean locked in; change parts and CIP still allow flavour rotation, but they are designed in from the start.
4. Hot-fill combiblock
A hot-fill combiblock blows, fills and caps in one carousel, with the product path designed for hot-fill duty. It brings the volume-plant advantages — lightest bottle, smallest footprint, lowest labour per bottle — to tea, for plants with stable formats at volume. The bottle is heat-rated and designed with the preform supplier for the hot-fill service.
The trade is format lock-in and own-bottle commitment. Volume tea plants with one or two formats are the natural home.
5. The tea front end
The front end is where tea is made or ruined: extraction control (time and temperature for leaf), or base dosing for concentrate, then deaeration against haze and oxidation, and a short, controlled hot path that protects the volatiles. The filler cannot fix a tea that the front end degraded — the two are specified together.
State the target appearance (clear vs cloudy milk-tea style) in the spec; it decides the clarification and homogenising decisions upstream.
6. Matching to output
| Результат | Configuration that fits | Упаковка |
|---|---|---|
| < 8,000 ДГПЖ | Автономные | PET or glass, flexible |
| 8,000–16,000 ДБЧ | Комплексный | PET, controlled |
| 16,000+ BPH | Комбиблок | Heat-rated PET, own preforms |
The bands are guides, not rules — format stability and bottle strategy shift them. What is fixed is the preservation route and the front end.
7. The upgrade path
The levels are a ladder: a standalone line earns revenue while demand grows, and the next step is a second line or a combiblock sized on proven demand — not a rebuild. Plan the hall for the second line from day one, and the upgrade is an addition, not a relocation.
The full tea and juice picture is in the соковыжималка range; the config logic is the same family as the juice and water configs.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
Which configuration is right for a first tea plant?
The one that matches year-one output and format stability: standalone for flexibility, integrated for mid-output control, combiblock for volume PET.
Is hot-fill the only route for tea?
Hot-fill is the mainstream for high-acid tea drinks. Cold filling exists with its own preservation route — contact Sunswell for the cold-fill option.
Does the tea front end differ from juice?
Yes — extraction control and haze prevention are tea-specific, and the hot path is kept shorter to protect tea volatiles.
Can one line run several tea flavours?
Yes — with change parts and a proper CIP path. Ask how the line handles flavour changeover at the configuration stage.
What output suits a combiblock?
Roughly 8,000 BPH and above with stable formats. Below that, standalone or integrated configurations are usually cheaper.
Has Sunswell delivered tea configs at scale?
Yes — Sunswell supplies hot-fill machines for tea in PET and glass, with the extraction and batching front end engineered per product.
