Короткий ответ: Equipment moves from China to Kazakhstan by direct block train rail, by road through the Xinjiang crossing, or by a short coastal sea leg into a rail terminal. Rail is the usual choice, with typical transit of 15–25 days, indicative only. Add crating, booking, the 1435 to 1520 mm gauge transfer at the border, customs clearance and inland delivery: factory acceptance to a commissioned line is realistically two to three months.

🎯 Основные выводы

  1. Three corridors: direct rail (middle cost), sea leg plus rail (lowest per tonne, slowest), road via Khorgos (highest cost, best for urgent and awkward pieces)
  2. Typical rail transit 15–25 days terminal to destination — indicative, and it moves with season and border congestion
  3. The combiblock main frame is not dismantled; its width and height decide whether it travels in an open top or on a flat rack
  4. Gauge changes from 1435 mm to 1520 mm at Dostyk or Altynkol — a routine handling step that queues when volumes are high
  5. Wood packaging must be treated and IPPC marked, and every crate needs weight, dimensions, centre of gravity and lifting points
  6. EAC documentation has to be issued before arrival — the most avoidable cause of equipment standing at a border
  7. Most delays are document mismatches: names, models, serials, quantities and weights must agree across the whole set

1. Three corridors, and what each one is for

Equipment leaving Zhangjiagang for Kazakhstan takes one of three practical routes. They are not interchangeable: they differ in transit time, in cost per tonne, and in what shape of cargo they can accept. Every transit figure on this page is indicative and should be re-confirmed against a live booking, because rail capacity and border throughput on this corridor move with the season.

Коридор Typical transit (indicative) Относительная стоимость Лучше всего подходит для
Block train rail, direct — inland move to a rail terminal such as Lianyungang, Xi'an or Chongqing, then across at Dostyk or Altynkol to Almaty or Astana 15–25 days terminal to destination средняя Complete lines; standard containers plus a small number of out-of-gauge pieces
Coastal sea leg to Lianyungang or Qingdao, then rail Longer than direct rail; add the sea leg and one extra handling Lowest per tonne Very heavy, non-urgent full loads where cost outweighs time
Road, via the Xinjiang crossing at Khorgos Broadly comparable to rail, sometimes faster door to door Наивысший Urgent partial shipments, spares, and awkward pieces that are hard to place on a flat

Most complete lines move by rail with the out-of-gauge items handled as exceptions within the same booking. Road earns its premium in two situations: when a single missing item is holding up commissioning, and when a piece cannot be secured economically on a container flat but will travel on a low loader.

Decide the route before the crates are built, not after. Crate dimensions that suit a flat rack may be impossible to secure on a road trailer, and a crate built 12 cm too tall for a container door forces an open top and a different rate. The packing list and the transport booking are the same conversation.

2. Rail: the default, and its two constraints

Rail handles the volume and weight of a filling line without the double handling that a sea route adds, and it reaches the main Kazakh industrial centres directly. Two features of the corridor deserve planning attention.

2.1 The gauge change

China's network is 1435 mm standard gauge; the Kazakh network and the wider region use 1520 mm broad gauge. At the crossing points, containers are lifted from standard-gauge to broad-gauge wagons, or wagons have their bogies exchanged. The operation is routine and well practised, but it is a physical handling step with finite terminal capacity, so it queues when volumes are high. Out-of-gauge cargo on flat wagons has to be re-secured after transfer, and the securing arrangement may need to be re-approved for the broad-gauge clearance envelope.

2.2 Capacity and season

  • Wagon and slot availability tightens in the fourth quarter and around the Chinese New Year shutdown.
  • Deep winter slows terminal handling; crane operations and shunting take longer in extreme cold.
  • Out-of-gauge approvals are route-specific and take time to obtain. Identify these pieces at contract stage, not when the crates are ready.
  • A booking is not a guarantee of a departure date. Build a buffer into the site plan rather than scheduling installation engineers against the first estimated arrival.

3. Road and the sea-plus-rail alternative

3.1 Road via Khorgos

Full road haulage runs from the factory across China to the Xinjiang border at Khorgos and on into Kazakhstan. It is a single handling operation from the factory floor to the plant floor, which is its main advantage: no transshipment, no crane at a border terminal, and no container door dimensions to design around. The trade-offs are cost, which is the highest of the three, and exposure to winter road conditions across long open sections. It is the sensible choice for a critical spare, for a piece that arrived damaged and has to be replaced quickly, and for oversized units on a low loader.

3.2 Coastal sea plus rail

A short coastal sea leg from the Yangtze delta into Lianyungang or Qingdao, followed by rail, lowers the cost per tonne for heavy consignments. It adds one handling stage and several days. It is worth evaluating when the shipment is dominated by weight rather than urgency — water treatment tanks, a large compressor package, or moulds and steel structures shipping separately from the main line.

4. Crating, container selection and out-of-gauge

How the line is packed determines what it costs to move and what condition it arrives in.

Параметр How it ships Типовое оборудование
Combiblock main frame One assembled unit, not dismantled; often exceeds container door height or width Open top or flat rack; check out-of-gauge clearance on the rail route
Separate blow moulder Machine frame crated, moulds packed separately 40 ft high cube if it passes the door opening
Воздушный компрессор и осушитель Занос установлен 40-футовый высокий куб
Очистка воды Skids plus tanks; tanks are bulky rather than heavy 40 ft high cube, tanks may need an open top
Conveyors and air conveyor Knocked down into bundles 40-футовый высокий куб
Labeller, coder, packer, palletiser Individually crated 40-футовый высокий куб
Moulds and change parts Heavy steel in small volume Distribute the weight; do not concentrate it on one container section
Запасные части и инструменты Crated and marked separately Ship with the line, or air freight the critical items

Indicative equipment envelopes, to be confirmed with the carrier: a 40 ft high cube gives roughly 12.0 m of internal length, about 2.35 m internal width and about 2.69 m internal height, with a door opening near 2.34 m wide by 2.58 m high and a payload commonly in the 26–28 t range. An open top has the same footprint but loads from above under a tarpaulin. A flat rack accepts loads that exceed container width or height and carries a higher payload, at an out-of-gauge surcharge.

4.1 Wood packaging and marking

  • Wooden crates and pallets must be treated to the international standard for wood packaging — heat treatment or fumigation — and carry the IPPC mark showing country, producer code and treatment code. Untreated or unmarked wood can be refused at the border.
  • Mark every crate with the project name, the crate number, gross and net weight, dimensions, the centre of gravity and the lifting points. Border handling is done by people who have never seen your machine.
  • Electrical cabinets get desiccant, moisture barrier wrapping and, on high-value shipments, shock and tilt indicators. A tilt indicator that has triggered is the difference between a supported insurance claim and an argument.
  • Photograph each crate loaded and secured. It costs nothing and settles most damage disputes.

Condensation is a winter cargo risk, not a summer one. A container loaded warm in a humid Chinese autumn and railed into a Kazakh winter will rain on its own contents. Specify desiccant quantity for the transit duration and wrap control panels and bare machined surfaces properly.

5. Documents, and getting them right the first time

Delays at this border are administrative far more often than physical. The clearance set normally comprises:

  1. Commercial invoice, matching the contract.
  2. Packing list with per-crate dimensions, gross and net weights.
  3. Contract or proforma, as required by the importer's bank and customs.
  4. Transport document — bill of lading for a sea leg, or the rail consignment note.
  5. Сертификат происхождения.
  6. EAC conformity certificate or declaration, issued before arrival.
  7. Technical passport and Russian-language manual for the equipment.
  8. Wood packaging treatment statement.
  9. Страховой сертификат.
  10. Agreed HS classification for each item, settled with the customs broker in advance.

The mechanical checks are unforgiving: importer name, machine model designations, serial numbers, quantities and weights must agree across every document. One digit different between the packing list and the invoice is enough to hold the consignment while it is corrected. Send the full set to the broker before the shipment departs, so that a discrepancy is fixed in China rather than at the crossing. Certification scope and responsibility are covered in Сертификация EAC для оборудования для производства напитков.

6. An indicative timeline from factory test to installation

Шаг Typical duration (indicative) Внимание
Factory acceptance test and buyer sign-off 3–7 дней Do not crate before the punch list is closed
Disassembly of peripherals, crating and marking 5–10 дней Runs faster when the packing list format was agreed earlier
Booking and inland move to the loading terminal 5–10 дней Longer for out-of-gauge, which needs route approval
Line haul including border transfer 15–25 дней Rail; road broadly similar, sea plus rail longer
Таможенная очистка 3–10 дней Assumes documents agree; a mismatch extends this without limit
Inland delivery to the plant 1–5 дней Confirm the last kilometre — access road, gate width, crane
Offloading, positioning, installation 15–30 дней Requires floor, power, air, water and drains finished

Taken together, factory acceptance to a commissioned line is realistically a two to three month window, and it is only that short when the site is genuinely ready. The general sequence after the order is described in доставка, установка и ввод в эксплуатацию, and the whole project view for this market in the Руководство по импорту оборудования в Казахстан.

7. Reducing the risk you actually control

  1. Agree the Incoterm deliberately. It decides who books the transport, who deals with the border, and who carries the cost of a delay. Choose it against your own capability, not against the lowest headline price.
  2. Give the forwarder the general arrangement drawing early. Out-of-gauge routing, equipment selection and rate all follow from real dimensions and weights.
  3. Get the conformity documents finished before departure. This is the single most avoidable cause of stationary equipment.
  4. Plan the last kilometre. Access road load capacity, turning radius, gate width, hardstanding, and the crane. More than one line has reached the plant boundary and stopped there.
  5. Do not book installation engineers against an estimated arrival. Book them against confirmed clearance and a site readiness check.
  6. Survey on arrival before signing. Open the crates with the forwarder present, photograph everything, and note damage on the receipt. A clean signature closes most claims.
  7. Ship critical spares with the line and air freight the rest when needed. Two weeks of freight to replace a failed sensor during commissioning costs more than the entire spares kit; see Сервис и поставка запасных частей в Казахстан и Центральную Азию..

Часто задаваемые вопросы

How long does shipping from China to Kazakhstan take?

Rail is the usual route and typical transit is 15–25 days from loading terminal to destination city, with road broadly similar and a sea leg plus rail longer. All of these are indicative. Add crating, booking, border transshipment, customs clearance and inland delivery — from factory acceptance to a machine standing on your floor, plan on several weeks rather than days.

Which route should we use for a filling line?

Rail suits most complete lines because it handles volume and weight at reasonable cost. Road via the Xinjiang crossings suits urgent partial shipments and awkward pieces that are difficult to place on a container flat. A short coastal sea leg into a rail terminal reduces cost for very heavy full loads at the price of extra handling and time.

Can a combiblock be dismantled to fit a standard container?

The main block is a single assembled frame and is not split for transport. Its width, height and weight decide the equipment type, which is why the general arrangement drawing has to be in the hands of the freight forwarder before anything is booked. Peripheral machines, conveyors and tanks travel separately.

What is the gauge change and does it delay the shipment?

China runs 1435 mm standard gauge and Kazakhstan runs 1520 mm broad gauge, so at the border either the containers are lifted onto broad-gauge wagons or the wagons have their bogies changed. It is routine, but it is a handling operation and it queues. Terminal congestion at the crossing is a more common source of delay than the transfer itself.

Does the EAC certificate need to be ready before the goods arrive?

Yes. Conformity documentation is presented at clearance, and resolving it after arrival is slower and more expensive than doing it in advance, with storage charges accruing throughout. Treat the certificate as a shipping prerequisite, not as paperwork that follows the machine.

What container types are used?

40 ft high cube for anything that fits through the door opening, open top for pieces that have to be craned in from above, and flat rack for units that exceed container width or height. Out-of-gauge cargo on rail needs clearance approval for the route and carries a surcharge, so it should be identified early.

What causes most customs delays at this border?

Documents that disagree with each other. The importer name, machine models and serial numbers, quantities and weights must match across the invoice, the packing list, the transport document and the conformity certificate. Physical inspection issues are far rarer than administrative mismatches.

Is winter a problem for this corridor?

It affects it in three ways: border terminals are slower in deep winter, road routes across the steppe close in snow and high wind, and condensation inside sealed containers is worse when a warm-loaded box travels into cold weather. Add schedule buffer and specify desiccant and wrapping accordingly.
