1. Why compare oil configurations

Edible oil filling machines look similar and diverge in what they cost and what they can run. The differences are in the valve family, the container family, the temperature control and the downstream automation. Comparing on a normalised scope prevents paying for weight accuracy the product does not need — or buying below what a weight declaration demands and discovering it through giveaway.

The container range sets the tier as much as the speed does. A line built only for 1–5 L PET sits in a different tier from one that must also fill jerry cans, and a bulk drum line is its own tier entirely. When a quotation says 'high-speed', check which container it means — 24,000 BPH on 1 L PET and 2,000 BPH on 20 L jerry can are both 'high-speed' for their container and very different machines.

Load cell comparison in particular needs the supporting items named. A load cell is only as good as its calibration, so test weights, a calibration routine and a log are part of the comparison, not extras a quote can leave out. A quotation that lists a load cell valve but omits test weights and the CIP circuit for greasy product is pricing half the machine. Put these on the scope list so every supplier answers the same question, and the apparent price gap shrinks to the real one.

Most edible oil lines fall into three tiers, set by output and automation rather than by quality. A regional PET bottler happy at 8,000 BPH gains nothing from a block built for 24,000.

A bulk tier sits across these for jerry can and drum, where BPH is lower but tonnes per hour is high. The valve is load cell for accuracy, and the output band follows the container size, not the PET rule.

Viscosity range within a grade also moves the valve choice. A thin refined oil fills on a simple volumetric valve; a cold-pressed or flavoured oil with pulp needs a piston or a volumetric valve with a large clear path. State the most viscous product you will run, not the average, because the valve is specified for the worst case in the range.

Speed claims also need the container named. A line called high-speed at 24,000 BPH on 1 L PET is a different machine from one called high-speed at 2,000 BPH on a 20 L jerry can, even though both move a similar tonnage. When a supplier quotes a speed, ask for the container and the fill temperature it applies to, because a number without that context is not comparable to another supplier's number on a different bottle. The comparison only works on like-for-like containers at the same temperature.

3. Valve family and what it changes

The valve family is fixed by the declaration and the viscosity. Load cell costs most per station because it measures weight directly and needs isolation from vibration; volumetric costs less and handles thin oil; piston handles the highest viscosity. Within a family, control level is the second cost lever.

Footprint follows the container family. A PET combiblock is compact; a jerry can and drum line with its own filler and capper spreads out; a bulk line needs space for drums and a pallet handler. Plan the hall for the full container range, not just the PET line, because the jerry can and drum machines are permanent neighbours, not temporary additions.

The temperature control is a cost and a quality item the comparison must show. Oil is filled warm, so a heater, a hold tank and inlet temperature control are part of the line; a quote that omits them prices a cold line that cannot hold rate on a viscous grade. State the grade and the target temperature so the heating duty is in every quote, and compare the energy use as well as the capex, because the heat recurs every shift and is part of the ownership cost, not a one-time line item.

4. The container family is a separate cost centre

PET, jerry can and drum are different machine families, and the container range drives price as much as the valve does. A combiblock for PET does not fill jerry cans or drums, so a plant selling all three runs separate machines. Two quotations that look close can hide very different container coverage.

If you sell more than one container family, the second machine is a real cost, not a format part. State the full range at quotation and ask for the change time and the footprint of each, because that is what the building must hold.

A second TCO trap is the commissioning spare part set. A line quoted without it looks cheaper until the first worn seal or missing test weight stops production and the part is a lead time away. The set is small relative to the machine but large relative to a day of downtime, so confirm it is included and that long-lead items are identified at handover.

For PET specifically, the block-or-separate decision repeats the general one: a blow-fill-cap block for edible oil wins on floor and handling when the volume justifies it, and a separate blower plus rinser-filler-capper wins below that volume or when the bottle range is broad. The block question for oil is in the selection guide, but for comparison the rule holds — set the block against the separate line on total installed cost, not on machine price alone, and the container family still decides whether the block applies at all.

5. Comparing on total cost, not sticker price

Two lines at the same headline price rarely cost the same to own. Evaluate on normalised scope and on the items below, treating all figures as indicative and configuration-dependent.

Normalise the scope before comparing prices. Send one scope list to every supplier and require each to answer it line by line, including exclusions. Missing temperature control, CIP or load cell and test weights is the usual source of apparent savings.

A sixth mistake is forgetting the container family in the comparison. Two quotes may both say 'load cell, 12,000 BPH' while one covers PET only and the other also covers jerry cans — the second is a different and larger machine for the same headline. Name every container in the scope before comparing.

6. Common comparison mistakes

Five errors recur in edible oil quotations:

  1. Comparing different scopes. One quote includes temp control and CIP; the other omits them.
  2. Rating on the smallest bottle. A line quoted at 12,000 BPH on 1 L may not hold it on 5 L; confirm on your main size.
  3. Underspecifying accuracy. A volumetric valve on weight-declared oil loses giveaway every bottle.
  4. Ignoring the container family. PET and jerry can are two machines, not one with parts.
  5. Buying load cell for thin low-value oil. The premium may not pay if declaration allows volume.

Lead time belongs in the comparison even though it is not in the price. A high-speed block from a busy builder may carry a longer slot than an economy line from a smaller shop, and the difference can matter more than the tier if your market window is fixed. Put the delivery date and payment milestones on the table with the configuration.

7. Which tier to specify

Match the tier to declared quantity, container and volume, not to ambition:

  1. Thin, volume-declared, small: economy tier, volumetric valve, PET.
  2. Weight-declared PET or jerry can: mainstream tier, load cell.
  3. High-volume PET: high-speed tier, load cell block.
  4. Bulk drum / IBC: bulk load cell filler, separate from PET.
  5. Multi-container: specify every family now; change parts handle one family, not two.

Buy the tier your declaration and volume justify. An economy line over-specifies nothing and a high-speed block under-used is capital parked on the floor.

What is the cheapest edible oil filling configuration?

A volumetric or gravity valve filler for thin, lower-value oil at modest output, with manual or semi-automatic packing. It suits a small retail line where declared-volume tolerance is loose. The limit is weight accuracy and automation, not reliability.

When does load cell filling pay off?

Whenever the oil is declared and sold by weight, and especially above 5 L where a percentage error is a large absolute quantity. Load cell recovers giveaway across the run, and on a high-value or large-container oil line the valve premium pays back in recovered product.

Is a combiblock worth it for edible oil?

For PET bottles, yes, if your volume justifies the block. A blow-fill-cap block for edible oil uses load cell filling on PET from 1 to 5 L or more, and removes the air conveyor and the empty-bottle handling. Below the volume where the block wins, a separate blower plus rinser-filler-capper is the better purchase.

Does container size affect price more than valve?
