Oil is sold by weight and its density moves with temperature — so the filler should measure mass, not litres.

1. Edible oil is a weight business, not a volume business
Almost every practical difference between an edible oil filling line and a water line follows from one commercial fact: oil is traded, declared and priced by mass. The label says grams or kilograms, the buyer's contract is in tonnes, and the regulator checks net weight. A machine that meters litres is measuring the wrong quantity. That would be a technicality if oil density were constant. It is not. Vegetable oils expand roughly 0.7–0.8% for every 10 °C of temperature rise, which means a storage tank that sits at 22 °C overnight and 34 °C by mid-afternoon delivers close to 1% more volume for the same mass. Set a volumetric filler to the correct volume in the morning and it gives away product by the afternoon, or under-fills if the tank cools.
- Over-filling is a direct cash loss. At high volume, giving away a fraction of a percent of oil on every bottle is measured in tonnes per year.
- Under-filling is a compliance loss. Net weight below declaration is a regulatory problem in most markets and a customer problem in all of them.
- Temperature control is not a fix. Holding a bulk oil tank to a tight temperature costs more than weighing the product.
Weighing sidesteps all three. The machine measures what the label declares, so the tank can drift and the result does not change.
2. How load cell weigh filling works
Each filling station carries its own load cell and its own valve. The sequence is the same at every station and it is simple enough that its accuracy is easy to trust:
- Tare. The empty container is weighed on the station. Bottle weight variation, which on a blown PET container is real, is removed from the result before filling starts.
- Coarse fill. The valve opens fully and delivers most of the dose at maximum flow, which is where the cycle time is won.
- Fine fill. Approaching target, flow reduces so the shut-off point can be hit precisely rather than overshot.
- Cut-off with in-flight compensation. The valve closes early by the mass still falling between nozzle and container, a figure the control learns and corrects run to run.
- Verify and record. Final net weight is read and logged. Out-of-tolerance containers are rejected downstream.
The rated accuracy is ± 0.1٪ on net weight. Note what that number does and does not include: it is the filling result, and it assumes a stable machine frame, clean load cells and a container that is not being knocked by a conveyor. Vibration is the enemy of weigh filling, which is why the mechanical installation and the floor matter more here than on a gravity water filler.
Level the machine properly and keep the floor still. Load cells respond to anything that loads the platform, including a vibrating conveyor drive transmitted through the floor slab or an unbalanced palletiser running nearby. Foundation quality and machine levelling are part of the accuracy specification, not site preparation trivia.
3. What weighing removes from the line
On a volumetric oil line the usual arrangement is a filler followed by an in-line checkweigher: fill by volume, then weigh every container afterwards and reject what falls outside tolerance. That works, but it is a second measurement of the same thing on a second machine, and it corrects nothing — it only sorts.

The honest caveat is in the last row. Some markets require an approved verification instrument in the line regardless of how the product was dosed. That is a legal question in your destination market, not an engineering one, and it should be answered before the checkweigher is taken out of the budget.
4. Viscosity, dripping and nozzle design
Oil is roughly fifty to eighty times more viscous than water at room temperature, and unlike water it does not break cleanly at the end of a pour. Two problems follow.
4.1 Flow rate and valve sizing
Higher viscosity means lower flow through the same orifice, so an oil valve is physically larger than a water valve for the same dose time, and the machine needs more stations for a given output. This is the main reason an oil line at a given hourly figure looks bigger than a water line at the same figure. Cold weather makes it worse: an unheated warehouse in winter raises viscosity sharply and slows the fill.
4.2 Drip and stringing
When the valve closes, a thread of oil wants to follow the nozzle. Left alone it lands on the neck finish, contaminates the sealing surface, causes cap leaks and makes labels lift. The countermeasures are mechanical and they are all specified against your actual oil:
- Positive shut-off nozzle that closes at the tip rather than upstream, so there is no column of oil left to drain
- Suck-back stroke that draws the last droplet back into the nozzle at cut-off
- Dive nozzle that fills below the liquid surface to limit foaming and splashing on light oils
- Drip trays and neck shields between stations to keep any escape off the container and off the machine
- Neck wipe or air knife before capping where the oil is particularly prone to stringing
Declare every oil grade you intend to run. Sunflower, soybean, rapeseed, olive and palm olein differ in viscosity, in how they behave near their cloud point and in how they wet a nozzle. A nozzle set tuned for one can drip with another. Listing all of them at enquiry stage costs nothing; discovering the third one after commissioning costs a nozzle change and a shutdown.
5. Capacity: converting t/h into bottles per hour
Edible oil machines are rated by mass throughput because that is how oil plants plan production. Sunswell builds the load cell configuration at 5-30 طن/ساعة. Read the table as arithmetic, not as a quotation. Two limits bite before the mass rating does. On small containers the machine runs out of stations and index time before it runs out of throughput, so the top figure is theoretical. 6. Containers, closures and headspace
6.1 PET or HDPE
Both are used for edible oil and the choice changes the machine layout. PET gives clarity, so the customer sees the oil, and it can be blown on the same frame as the filler in a كتلة — preform in, filled and capped bottle out. HDPE is extrusion blow moulded on a different process entirely, so an HDPE line uses a standalone rinser-filler-capper fed from a separate bottle source. If the container material is undecided, decide it before choosing between a block and a separate filler.
6.2 Closures and the sealing surface
Oil is unforgiving of a contaminated neck finish. Any film of oil on the sealing surface reduces the seal and the bottle weeps in the carton and in the shop. Closures for oil are typically fitted with an induction or wad liner and a tamper band, and capping torque has to be verified with the actual closure. Changing closure supplier is a re-validation, not a purchasing decision.
6.3 Headspace and shelf life
Oxygen in the headspace drives oxidative rancidity, and the rate depends on the oil, the light exposure and the storage temperature. Nitrogen dosing immediately before capping displaces most of that oxygen. It is worth costing where the oil is high in polyunsaturates, where the distribution chain is long, or where the label carries an extended shelf life.
7. Cleaning an oil line
Cleaning is where teams coming from water or juice production are most often surprised. The soil is a fat film, and water alone does not remove it.
- Drain and push out. Recover as much product as possible before cleaning; recovered oil has value and reduces effluent load.
- Hot alkaline wash. Warm caustic saponifies the fat film so it can be rinsed. Temperature matters as much as concentration.
- شطف. Treated water until the alkalinity is gone.
- Acid stage where required. Used for mineral deposits from the wash water rather than for the oil itself.
- Dry the product path. Residual water in an oil line causes cloudiness and shortens shelf life. This step has no equivalent on a water line and is often forgotten.
Grade changeover deserves its own procedure. Moving from a strongly flavoured oil to a neutral one carries over taste and colour, and allergen-relevant oils need documented separation. Plan the production sequence so changeovers run in the direction that needs the least cleaning, and keep the effluent side in mind — fat-laden wash water needs a grease interceptor before it reaches the drain.
Effluent is a design item on an oil line. Alkaline, fat-bearing wash water will not pass most discharge limits untreated. Establish the local limit and size the interception and treatment before the building drainage is poured, not after the first inspection.
8. How to choose — and what goes wrong
A short decision sequence covers most edible oil enquiries:
- If the declared quantity is mass — which it normally is — then specify load cell weigh filling and stop comparing volumetric accuracy figures.
- If the container is PET and you are buying bottles today, then a combiblock removes the bottle purchase, the bottle store and the empty-bottle freight.
- If the container is HDPE or glass, then a standalone rinser-filler-capper is the configuration; blowing happens on a different process.
- If you run several oil grades, then specify the nozzle set and the cleaning procedure for the worst-case oil, not the easiest one.
- If your market requires an approved verification instrument, then keep the checkweigher regardless of filler accuracy.
- If viscosity is high or the plant is cold in winter, then discuss product line heating and station count early, because both change the machine size.
The recurring mistakes are equally short: quoting on one oil and running three; deleting the checkweigher without checking the legal requirement; installing a weigh filler on a floor that transmits vibration from a nearby machine; treating oil cleaning as a water rinse; and leaving the drying step out of the changeover procedure.
