1. What CIP does
Clean-in-place circulates cleaning solutions through the product path without dismantling the line: the tanks, pipes, valves and filler passages are cleaned by flow, temperature and chemistry instead of by hand. The system needs a return path, a pump sized for the circuit, and a control programme that runs the cycle — and it is the difference between a line that is clean and a line that is provably clean.
CIP does not replace inspection — the removable parts are still checked — but it cleans the parts that cannot be reached, and it does it consistently, cycle after cycle.
2. The CIP cycle
A standard cycle: pre-rinse (remove the bulk), caustic wash (dissolve the soil), intermediate rinse, acid wash where the product needs it (scale and mineral films), final rinse, and verification. The cycle parameters — temperatures, concentrations, flow rates and times — are set per product and soil type, and stored in the control programme. The same hardware runs different cycles for different products.

3. Chemistry and product
The chemistry follows the soil: syrup and juice soil differently from water, and protein or fat soils (dairy, some sauces) need a different wash. The supplier engineers the cycle around the product list — and the plant runs the chemistry the line was designed for. Deviating to a cheaper chemical or a shorter cycle saves pennies and risks the batch.
State the product list and its cleaning history with the enquiry — the CIP design is a response to the soil, not a generic skid.

6. Designing the system
The CIP/SIP system is designed with the line: the return path and slopes (drainable low points), the tank capacities, the pump sizing, the heat input for temperature, and the control programme with recipe storage. A line designed for CIP from the start is cleanable; a line retrofitted for it is a compromise. The design decisions are part of the line's technical agreement.
Drainability is the hidden spec — a low point that cannot drain is a standing puddle of product and a biofilm risk. It is decided in the piping design, not the cleaning cycle.
7. What to specify
Four inputs settle the CIP/SIP spec: the product list and soil types, the line output and circuit lengths, the verification requirement (conductivity or pH logging), and the sanitising regime (CIP only, or CIP plus SIP) for the product's market.
